Our Junior House pupils benefit from access to a broad and balanced curriculum, which enriches their educational experience and leads to high standards of attainment. National Curriculum levels are achieved and exceeded, with the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and ICT being given priority. Many subjects are taught by specialist teachers, whose engaging lessons reflect the passion that they hold for their subjects. Each child's strengths, whether academic, sporting, artistic, musical or dramatic, are celebrated and nurtured and any child needing additional support is given one-to-one assistance. Our small class sizes allow teachers to really get to know each child and to help him or her achieve their full potential. Teaching assistants for each year group ensure that a good adult to child ratio is maintained. The curriculum is structured so that by the time the children reach their final year, plenty of time is available for consolidation of their learning in preparation for the Entrance Exams to Senior Schools.
The Junior House children make full use of the facilities available to them at Kew College. ICT skills are taught during lessons in our ICT Suite and are applied in lessons across the curriculum using iPads. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are spent at the Games Field and competing in fixtures against local schools. Early Thursday mornings are spent at Pools on the Park in Richmond and our children compete in numerous inter-school galas. Our range of choirs and instrumental ensembles offer opportunities for the children to work collaboratively and to perform at many music events throughout the year.
As well as our focus on academic progress, we aim to equip our children with the appropriate skills for the next stage in their education and with a healthy self-esteem. Through Critical Thinking, which has become embedded throughout the curriculum, children develop independence and confidence to make their own informed choices. Our children are our greatest ambassadors, demonstrating commitment, responsibility, respect for others and an ability to co-operate at all levels.
